DJ NIFRA: "I had always interests which were typical for men as the society tries to tell us"

Today's interview is with  is one of Slovakias's most famous  young female DJs. Beautiful, and talented with an impressive career to date is the only way to describe Nikole Frajkor  otherwise known as producer and DJ Nifra. DJing now for over 4 years she has plays all over Eurpoe , Asia and  now Afrika. She has shared stages with Markus Schulz, Leon Bolier, Gareth Emery, Sander van Doorn and Andy Moor  and many more. Keep reading the interview below  to hear her story...

 - For the people who are not too familiar with who you are, can you introduce yourself and tell a little bit about your background?

Im 24 years old and Im a trance dj and producer from eastern part of Slovakia. My tracks are usually released on dutch label Armada music and been supported by all the top djs like Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren or Markus Schulz.
- How you started out in the music industry and when did you make your debut as DJ?

I was interested in electronic dance music since I was 13 years old.  I had dreamed about being a dj and producer ever since. 3 years later I started to dig into production and djing however my very first time behind the decks was when I was 18.

 - Which track that you have made is best by your own opinion ?

All of my tracks are my little babies and I never finish a track till Im 150% satisfied with it. I would say those which were the most successful I guess. That special place in my heart is my first released track “Ready” and my latest single “Dark Harbour”.

- Exactly what means trance to you?

Its electronic dance music genre which is the closest to me. What I love about it are strong melodies which are carrying emotions.  You can express through it a lot of emotions and still get the great energy.

- How are you after a show?

Thirsty! I don’t like drinking through my set, or I don’t have time :P But Im usually super happy. Even if you are very tired u cant feel it as u get so much energy from the audience and the music.

- As an DJ, how would you define success?

Success in djing means happy faces of people who came to see you and people really enjoying the music. There is no better feedback than that!

- What are your goals in life, and have you met any of them yet?

One of my goals was to be able to earn for living with my music. There is so many great musicians who would like to be able to not have a day job but make it with their music. Partly I achieved that !

- Considering that the industry is particularly male-dominated, Do you think that female DJs have more pressure on their shoulders than male DJs to meet expectations? And what is the advantages and disadvantages of being a female DJ?

Yeah there is definitely a pressure. I had always interests which were typical for men as the society tries to tell us. I personally hate when people divide what is right or wrong for men and women. Every human being is an individual and I think we shouldn’t be judged according to our sex but our personality, interests, hobbies. Parents give their daughters a doll and baby buggie as toys from an early age. So we shouldn’t be surprised that In a modern 21st century society there are still people who say that women are not able to dj or produce music and their place is somewhere else. Things which are completely normal for me seems to be not quite normal or even possible for women according to some people. I see this as a huge disadvantage, when u are taken not quite seriously.

- Who are your musical influences now and as you when you started?

When I started to listen to electronic dance music it used to be german dj and producer ATB. He was my biggest inspiration when I basically decided that that’s the same thing I would like to do in the future. Later it was Tiesto, Armin and Markus Schulz which is still one of my biggest influences.

- Do your parents like the music you produce?

Never really asked them but I do show them my production.  They say they like it but ofcourse they are different generation so I assume they wanna be nice ! But they are very proud of me.

- What kind of music do you listen at private?

Its definitely more deeper music. At the moment I have Anjunadeep compilation on repeat.

- How would you describe your personality to people?

Djs are considered extroverts but that’s not applying to myself. Im more introvert, sometimes reserved and super shy. But when I go on stage I totally change, I guess it just proves that that’s where I feel the most comfortable.

- What is the one thing you admire that means the world to you?

I admire honesty and people who are fair. Nothing is worse than people lieing into your face.

- I read your post on Facebook that you went back to Sweden, what is your connection to Sweden?

Im living here with my boyfriend who is Swedish. I moved here 2 years ago and since I was studying in my home country Slovakia, I had to fly few times a year for exams and gigs. But now that I finished my studies Im permanently living in Sweden.

 - Whats been your proudest or greatest achievements so far and whats your plan future plan as DJNifra?

The proudest moment this year was that I could play on the biggest trance event in the whole world – A state of trance 550 in the Netherlands.
As a dj I would like to visit more countries and as a producer to produce more great music.

- Who’s the Greatest DJ, of All Time?

For me the greatest djs are people who puts their everything into it. As for trance, I admire Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz probably the most. Strong connection with the audience is one of the most important elements in trance music and those guys are here for the people.

- Thanks Nicol, appreciate a lot for your time, any last words  to the readers of this blog?

Thank you for support and see you soon on some event!
